## Understanding Place Values

A place value can be represented by a particular position in a place-value-notation. It is otherwise called as positional systems. A value given to a digit by the place in which it occurs in the number related to the unit’s place. For counting process, it is very useful for understanding the numeration system. There are three main concepts for understanding numeration system is grouping, counting and place value concepts. Let us see about understanding the concept of place values in this article.

Understanding

In two digits problem, there are two place values namely one’s and ten’s.

The first digit from the right side is called one’s place.

The second digit from the right side is called ten’s place.

73

Here, the first digit 7 represents ten’s place. It tells that there are 7 ten’s in the number 73.

The second digit 3 represents one’s place. It tells that there are 3 one’s in the number 73.

Understanding Place Values for Three Digits Numbers

In three digits problem, there are three place values namely one’s, ten’s and hundred’s.

The first digit from the right side is called one’s place.

The second digit from the right side is called ten’s place.

The third digit from the right side is called hundred’s place.

I have recently faced lot of problem while learning

926

The first digit 9 represents hundred’s place. It tells that there are 9 hundred’s in the number 926.

The second digit 2 represents ten’s place. It tells that there are 2 ten’s in the number 926.

The third digit 6 represents one’s place. It tells that there are 6 one’s in the number 926.

Therefore, there are 9 sets of hundred’s plus 2 sets of ten’s and 6 one’s in the number 926.

Understanding Place Values for Four Digit Numbers

In four digits problem, there are four place values namely one’s, ten’s, hundred’s and thousandths.

The first digit from the right side is called one’s place.

The second digit from the right side is called ten’s place.

The third digit from the right side is called hundred’s place.

The fourth digit from the right side is called thousandth place.

5289

The first digit 5 represents thousands place. It tells that there are 5 thousands in the number 5289.

The second digit 2 represents hundred’s place. It tells that there are 2 hundred’s in the number 5289.

The third digit 8 represents ten’s place. It tells that there are 8 ten’s in the number 5289.

The fourth digit 9 represents one’s place. It tells that there are 9 one’s in the number 5289.

Therefore, there are 5 sets of thousands plus 2 sets of hundred’s plus 8 sets of ten’s and 9 one’s in the number 5289.

Example Problems for Understanding Place Values

What is the place value 9 in the whole number 592?

The second digit represents the ten’s place from the right side.
